Hilarious
I told Aidan to pick out his clothes last night for preschool today. I came back in and he had 3 shirts picked out. I put a long-sleeved one away and said, "We wear this shirt when it is cold." Aidan thought about it for a minute and put his hand on the shirt and said, "Mommy, it isn't cold."

Daddy and the Boys Most Excellent Adventure
Before leaving on our Midwest vacation, we celebrated Caleb's 1st birthday. Caleb polished off that cupcake, right before his scheduled bedtime. Right after he ate it I figured out that him eating that one cupcake was equal to me (Andy) eating 8 cupcakes for my bodyweight . . . he was awake for awhile that night.

In Muskegon, Aidan fell in love with Uncle Bubba's big, big truck!
Aidan with Uncle Ron, mowing Great-Grandma Smith's lawn (and then the golf course apparently)
At Baumgartner's, a must eat place in Monroe. The waitress stuck a dollar to the ceiling with a tack.

Life without Colleen does prove at times to cause, as Thomas the Train narrator would say, "confusion and delay". The other day was such a time when we lost Caleb in the house for a moment. We found him at the front door . . . saying hello to the world.

Vacation stories
The boys are all enjoying Nana and Papa this week.
Two cute stories Andy told me (since he has the camera, I cannot post pics yet):
Andy was laying down with Aidan and he told him to "close his eyes." Aidan told him that he couldn't close his eyes because they were "too big."
They went to a Railroad Museum today and the train sounded its horn, and so for the rest of the ride, Aidan kept his hands over his years.

Reflections on a birthday
My new boss at work writes her daughters a letter each year on their birthday; it was inspiring to me, so I thought I would at least write something annually for them (it may be a better mother-daughter thing than mother-son, but at least I will read them again!)
Poor Caleb didn't even get a candle today-- his present was to go to bed EARLY since he was tired tonight. Don't worry-- we will make up for it in the next 2 weeks!
One year ago there was a lot going on! (no pressure to read the following since it is probably boring to anyone but me!)
The Saturday before Caleb was born on a Tuesday our power went out for about 15 hours, and in August in Georgia, this is not trivial. I remember waking up every 1-2 hours and running my head under the faucet to try to cool off. Not sure this didn't help me get into labor a few days later! My mother-in-law had arrived on Sunday to help us out the last week before Caleb's due date on August 14th. I had an appt on Monday and was fairly dilated and my OB scared me about going into labor (because Aidan's was so quick), and to call right away if anything happened; I had also scheduled to be induced on 8/8/08 at that appt. I think it just made me anxious, so I had some false labor that night (8/4), but because it was my OB was on call, she told me to come in at about 1am.
I went in and they monitored me, and the nurse was sort of impatient and didn't do a good job, since she thought I would just go home since it was false labor. My OB decided to keep me until the next day and induce me in the morning, but at the morning shift change I was so discouraged because the night nurse had been so unhelpful that I was crying. It all changed when my morning nurse came in and asked how I was, and I told her how I felt, and she looked at me and said, "It is going to be a good day". I felt very reassured at that moment, and my mother-in-law, Sheryl, also prayed with me that morning.
They started the induction at 8am. At 10:40 I had some bad contractions (which I now think was transition!), so they placed an epidural. At 11:00am I had some back pain, and they checked me, and I was 10cm! Baby Caleb was born at 11:40am at 9 lbs 4 oz, and I gasped when I saw him-- he looked HUGE. Andy was crying and cut the umbilical cord. He had chubby cheeks, curly dark hair (was he switched??), and already had sizeable eyelashes. He barely made a peep until they started giving him the bath, and then he was UNHAPPY. He was a very lazy baby compared to Aidan and I had to torture-nurse him for awhile. They also checked his glucose every 3 hours for 24 hours because he was so big.
Aidan, Sheryl and Andy came in the afternoon to visit and Aidan was really weirded out by seeing me in a strange place in a strange bed. He thought Caleb was cool, but enjoyed the cars we had bought him much more!!
We also didn't name Caleb until later that day. I had originally liked the name Rowan, but we liked Caleb better-- I love that Biblical character, and I felt like God had been faithful throughout my pregnancy and Caleb's delivery.
You have been the most joyous child. At times you can carry things on longer than necessary (I call it brooding), but in the last few weeks, you have shown to be an outgoing, funny little guy. Separation anxiety is huge right now, but when you are with us, you are very outgoing, and love to explore. You started walking at 11months and have been trying to climb as well. Right now when we say, "Where is Caleb" you say, "AAAAAH". You can reproducibly sort of say "doggy" "out", "Daddy", "Aidan (A-dee)", and "duck". You are darling and we love you!
